Define the decisions ahead
Ask how the team will review goals, tolerability, health changes, and practical barriers over time. You do not need a promise of a final weight or fixed treatment duration to understand the care process. Request an explanation of which decisions are planned and which will depend on information gathered later.
Include the rest of everyday life
Discuss meals, activity, work, family responsibilities, sleep, and access to support in the context of what you can realistically do. NIDDK’s habit-change guidance recognizes preparation, action, and maintenance as a process. Use that perspective to ask for manageable next steps rather than a routine that works only during an unusually quiet week.
Ask how the relationship changes
Clarify future visit arrangements, how costs may evolve, and what happens if your priorities or circumstances shift. Ask how a transfer of care would be handled if needed. A sustainable plan includes ways to raise problems, not just instructions for an ideal month. Your individual clinical recommendations must come from your treating team.
Make the conversation yours
Questions to take with you.
- What decisions will we reassess over time?
- How will the plan adapt to my real routine?
- How are future visits and costs handled?
